According to the Washington Post's recent analysis, Rhode Island accidentally legalized prostitution for several years.  This was due to a drafting mistake when the Rhode Island Legislature revised part of the prostitution laws.  According to a study cited by the Post, rape crimes when down when prostitution was legal in Rhode Island.
As you may have heard, the Police Chief of Robbinsdale, Minnesota was recently arrested for soliciting a prostitute. In this case, the Police Chief, Steven D. Smith, was arrested February 20, 2014. The arrest of the police chief, however, did not become public until he was formally charged and appeared in court around March 23, 2014.
Those facing sex crimes charges in Minnesota may find the following story very interesting. More than 30 individuals were alleged to have been involved in a conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of children in three states, including Minnesota.
Lawmakers in Minnesota are reviewing a proposed law that would treat children trafficked for sex as victims instead of criminal offenders. The purpose of the bill is to help children caught up in the illicit sex trade get out and find treatment and safety. Currently, some cities in Minnesota already treat children involved in sex crimes as victims. The proposed law would bring uniformity to municipalities across the state.
