Minnesota home health care business charged for theft

The owners of a Minnesota home health care business based in Brooklyn Park were charged with multiple counts of theft last Wednesday. The criminal complaint alleges the two owners of the business, who are sisters, fraudulently billed the state of Minnesota almost $400,000 for personal care services that were never provided. The industry of personal health care services has rapidly expanded over the last few years and the Office of Minnesota Attorney General has been tasked with fighting fraud cases that come from the industry.

Woman Falsely Accused of Murder to be Released from Nevada Prison After 17 Years After Being Exonerated

A Nevada judge has ruled that a woman held in prison for 17 years after being falsely convicted of murder should be freed now that she has been exonerated. Utah recently passed a law in 2008 allowing for people to prove they are factually innocent of a crime for which they have been wrongfully convicted. The law allows an unspecified amount of restitution to people who have been wrongfully convicted, imprisoned for years, and then exonerated or proven to be innocent.

Drug treatment courts cut down likelihood to reoffend

According to a new study offenders who have committed drug crimes and have gone through a drug treatment court are not as likely to reoffend as those who participate in adjudication processes that lack addiction treatment. Criminal sentences that do not address addiction are more expensive because they do not address the underlying issue according to one doctor who reviewed the study.

FBI Lacks Experience in Cyber Crime

A recent study by the U.S. Justice Department’s Inspector General has concluded that many FBI agents lack expertise to investigate Cyber Crime cases they are assigned to. In addition, the FBI failed to share national security information or intelligence with other agencies as it was supposed to, even with agencies that shared information with the FBI, including on Cyber Crimes such as hacking into government computers or foreign companies stealing trade secrets from U.s. companies by hacking.

For one demographic in Hennepin County, the need for criminal defense has decreased thanks to police patrols and community coaches. Juvenile crime in Minneapolis and Hennepin County has decreased by 40 percent over the last five years and community coaches have played a major role in the decline.

Supreme Court hears case on extending prisoners’ sentences for rehabilitation

The United States Supreme Court heard a case on Monday that will decide whether federal judges can sentence prisoners for a longer amount of time for rehabilitation. The Court’s decision will impact over 80,000 federal criminals who are sentenced every year and those who seek criminal defense. The case made it to the Supreme Court because lower federal court judges are split as to whether rehabilitation time can be considered in a convicted criminal’s sentence.

Minnesota lawmakers consider efforts to criminalize synthetic drugs

Lawmakers in Minnesota this week considered adding synthetic drugs to the state’s list of drug crimes. Synthetic drugs like 2C-E and 2C-1 go by the name of “bath salts” and are amphetamines that are legally obtainable over the internet. Though the drugs are legal they have serious and fatal health consequences. On March 11 young people in Blaine, Minnesota overdosed on 2C-E and one 19-year-old died from an overdose during the same incident.

Minn. Fails Felony Probation-ers: #1 Sending Them back to Prison

Minnesota is failing its prisoners released on Felony Probation. We are the Leading the Country in sending persons on Felony Probation back to Prison within 3 years. That means we are failing big-time,and wasting a lot of money. We should be turning these people recently released from prison into tax-paying citizens so that they can work and their payroll taxes will help pay for OUR Social Security and Medicare benefits when we retire.

As the weather in Minnesota finally transitions from the long winter to reliably warm spring days, high school students near the dates of prom and high school graduation and graduation parties. For some, high school prom and graduation parties are a rite of passage where underage drinking occurs. The reality is that a season of celebration that throws alcohol into the mix can result in danger, death and DUI.
