Minneapolis Veterans Treatment Court needed in outstate Minnesota

Since Hennepin County launched its Veterans Treatment Court only two years ago, more than 100 veterans have appeared before the court to get the help they need instead of a lengthy prison sentence. The Minneapolis court has become a model and now advocates say the same type of court is needed in greater Minnesota as well. The point of the special court is to address the underlying issues veterans facing criminal charges struggle with and what ultimately brings them into the criminal justice system in the first place.

Should a jury note in Amy Senser’s trial lead to a new trial? Part II

Earlier in the week, we talked about a note that could possibly lead to a new criminal vehicular homicide trial for Amy Senser. Though the Hennepin County judge who tried her case for a supposed hit-and-run that happened last year has not yet decided whether he will grant a new trial or acquit Senser of her criminal charges, he has 15 days to determine what he will do.

Community coaches play role in drop of juvenile crime

For one demographic in Hennepin County, the need for criminal defense has decreased thanks to police patrols and community coaches. Juvenile crime in Minneapolis and Hennepin County has decreased by 40 percent over the last five years and community coaches have played a major role in the decline.

Prosecution of juvenile crime falls in Dakota County

Last month, we wrote about the fall in juvenile crime prosecutions in Hennepin County. This month information has been released that shows Dakota County is also experiencing a similar trend. The downward trend in juvenile crime prosecutions in Dakota County has occurred consistently over the last eight years. The local trend is a part of a national decline in the number of juveniles who face prosecution and need criminal defense. Some legal experts believe the downward direction of juvenile crimes is attributed to anti-bullying, anti-drug abuse and juvenile crime prevention initiatives.

Alternative community program lowers juvenile detention numbers

The number of young offenders who face prosecution and need criminal defense in Hennepin County is on the decline because of the county’s alternative community program. The Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative is responsible for decreasing the number of juvenile offenders in the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center (Juvenile Detention Center) by half in comparison to 2006.
