Meth Drug Trade Not Stopped by Cold Medicine Electronic Sales System

Over the last few years customers of local pharmacies have had to obtain cold medicine by taking a slip of paper stocked in the medicine aisle to a pharmacist where the over-the-counter drug would be tracked via an electronic tracking system. The purpose of the electronic system was to monitor the buyer’s legal limit of pseudoephedrine, a cold medicine used to make methamphetamine, and to reduce the number of drug crimes associated with the creation of meth.

Sentencing for Tom DeLay White Collar Crime Case

The sentencing phase of the Tom DeLay trial will begin today. The former congressman from Houston, Texas was convicted on the white collar crime charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and money laundering on November 24, 2010. The conspiracy and money laundering charges were a part of an illegal plan to direct campaign money from corporations to candidates from Texas running for political office in 2002.

New Ruling Allows Police to Search Phones Without Warrant

To the possible dismay of criminal defense and constitutional law attorneys across the United States, a California judge ruled Monday that police in the state of California may search an arrested individual’s phone. The ruling allows police to search any data that is kept on an arrested person’s phone. Under the ruling data is considered to include texts, emails, photos, web browsing history, address books or other data stored on the phone. The ruling only affects California law.

Burglars Break into Local Band’s House in Saint Paul

What is a criminal defense case for the suspects is a case of a Christmas Eve gone terrible for the victims. A local musician who is a part of a well known local rock band had his Saint Paul home and recording studio broken into over the evening of Christmas Eve. The musician lost $25,000 in electronic gear but more importantly he lost two albums that he had been recording for two different bands.

Man Seeks Criminal Defense for Accessing Wife’s Email Account

A Michigan man seeks criminal defense as he faces up to five years in prison for accessing his soon to be ex-wife’s email account. The man is being prosecuted under a Michigan state anti-hacking law normally enforced to punish individuals who have hacked into a government or private business computer system. The man accessed his wife’s email account to confirm whether or not his wife was having an affair.

Pacemaker Identifies Man in Wanted in Fraud Case

A Florida husband and wife wanted for charges of fraud were apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigations after the 62-year-old husband sought treatment at a hospital for a severe bloody nose. The man had a pacemaker and the pacemaker is thought to play a role in hospital workers identifying the man. The Federal Bureau of Investigations has been after the couple for over two years. The married couple owned a title insurance company together and were wanted for stealing around $10 million from clients.

Drug Courts Can Set You Free, Or At least Keep You Out of Jail

The use of specialized Drug Courts is spreading across the country and the state of Minnesota. Drug courts lower costs for incarceration, potentially lowering taxes for all citizens. In addition, intensive supervision and drug treatment handed out as sentences in drug courts in lieu of lengthy jail time saves money by, among other things, reducing the chances that a Minnesota drug crime defendant will be re-arrested.

Source Code Hearings Continue in Hastings, Dakota County DWI Consolidated Litigation

Today, December 17, 2010, the Intoxilyzer DWI source code hearings continued in front of Judge Jerome Abrams in Hastings at the Dakota County Courthouse. Judge Abrams is hearing thousands of DWI criminal cases and implied consent driver’s license cases all challenging the source code or software for the Intoxilyzer used to test drivers suspected of DWI. Max A. Keller of KellerLawOffices has been an active participant in the source code litigation, having challenged the breath testing software or Intoxilyzer source code for several years.
